Chronic pain is one of the most underestimated healthcare problems in the world today, causing major consequences for the quality of life of sufferers and a major burden on the healthcare system and society. One in five people in the general adult population – 110 million Europeans – has chronic pain, more than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined. With an aging population, the problem is likely to be felt even stronger in the years to come. Conventional treatment options offer only a partial response to the problem, with many people continuing to suffer with their severe chronic pain on a daily basis, despite receiving several treatments. Consequently, there is a true and significant unmet need in optimal pain management.
SzeleSTIM offers an innovative, patient-centered and closed-loop pain management system – AuriMod – utilizing electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve in the ear.
AuriMod will be designed as a minimally-invasive and reusable wearable, which measures physiological signals and major determinants of the stimulation therapy. Its unique biofeedback controlled algorithm uses patient real-time physiological data for automatically and individually adjusting the therapy.
AuriMod is interfacing with a comprehensive online therapy management system using mobile and web applications. It will allow patients and physicians to monitor the therapeutic progress and control the stimulation accordingly.
The key objective of the project is to demonstrate the clinical safety, efficacy and usability of AuriMod including the online therapy management system in chronic back pain patients, in order to achieve CE marking after the clinical trial.
SzeleSTIM paves the way for truly individualized chronic pain treatment, based on the patient’s individual condition and dynamic needs.
Individual Pain Therapy
AuriMod is able to measure vital parameters like the heart rate or the heart rate variability. Those and other parameters are combined to estimate an individual and objective pain score.
The individual pain score is used to automatically adjust the auricular stimulation to the needs of the patient.
A mobile application collects the data from AuriMod, enables further patient specific adjustment of the therapy and implements an interface to a web based therapy management system. This also enables remote monitoring.
